Snow Country Farm Experience – Dining in the Rice Fields

Follow in the footsteps of Matsuo Basho, Japan's most famous haiku poet, on this guided, intermediate-level walking tour.

Program Overview

  • Experience a truly special setting—inside a farmer’s private rice fields, normally closed to visitors
  • Taste local dishes prepared with rice, vegetables, and wild mountain plants
  • Reserve exclusively for your family or group for a private, unforgettable experience

We invite you to a unique experience on a farmer’s rice field—an area normally closed to visitors.
On a small rise in the field, we spread out mats and enjoy simple yet heartwarming countryside dishes, prepared with freshly harvested ingredients from the neighboring fields. This is a rare opportunity to savor traditional rural cuisine in an authentic setting.

Whether with family or friends, you can share this memorable time together. The experience can be arranged for lunchtime, early morning, or evening. Guided by the farmer himself, you will spend a relaxing holiday in the countryside, enjoying delicious food amidst beautiful rural scenery—an experience you can only find here.

Set in Myoko and Uonuma in Niigata Prefecture, this full-course dining experience showcases the unique ingredients of Japan’s snow country. The world’s heaviest snowfall produces pure snowmelt water, enriching the land and cultivating rice renowned as among the finest in the world.

The surrounding forests, nourished by abundant snow, are treasure troves of wild vegetables in spring and vibrant ingredients throughout the seasons. From the Sea of Japan, fresh seafood arrives with each change of season.

Each dish is carefully prepared using these regional ingredients, combining the wisdom of traditional cuisine with modern culinary techniques. Paired with local sake, the essence of Snow Country Gastronomy comes alive.

Your special stage is set in rice fields and serene forests — a once-in-a-lifetime seat to savor the life and culture nurtured by snow.

Special Advisor to This Tour

Miyo Takeda

From an early age, she grew up surrounded by forests, mountains, and rivers, developing a deep familiarity with camping and outdoor life. At university she studied in the Faculty of Agriculture, researching programs centered on nature and the revitalization of rural communities in Japan. She also joined a mountaineering club, spending her days immersed in the mountains throughout all four seasons, which further deepened her relationship with the natural world.

Today she travels across Japan by car, experiencing diverse landscapes and regional ways of life. Rather than well-maintained campgrounds, she is drawn to untouched environments — deep forests and clear waters where she can feel the silence and inherent beauty of the land. Although she was initially apprehensive about solo camping, she gradually discovered its appeal and now enjoys venturing farther into the wilderness.

She holds a strong affection for Japan’s farming villages and satoyama landscapes, believing they contain a richness and warmth absent from urban life. These experiences form the foundation of her work connecting people with nature and regional culture.
